Surrounded by the Western Ghats in the East, Idukki lies at an altitude of 2500 feet above sea level. One of the most beautiful districts in Kerala, Idukki was carved out of Devikulam in 1972. The place derives its name from Malayalam word 'Idukku' which means a narrow gorge.
Numerous narrow steep- sided valleys, high ranges and wooded valleys gives weight to the name Idukki. The sacred river Pamba also originates from the mountain ranges here.
